Remember the Song, "Walk Like a Christian?"

Person walking across sand in distance illustrating walking like a Christian.

Yes, you’re correct. The song is Walk Like an Egyptian. Now think about this. What would the lyrics be of a song called Walk Like a Christian?

What Kind of Tune Would It Be?

Would it be a catchy tune that would reverberate in your head and conjure up images of people sitting in church raising their hands in praise? Would it be a more measured, thoughtful piece raising images of someone deep in prayer or reading the Bible? Or would it have a more dramatic, somber rhythm invoking images of volunteers feeding hungry people or assisting an elderly person in a nursing home?

The lyrics could summon up images of people like you and me worshiping the triune God, learning about him through his Word, communicating with him through prayer, obediently living according to his commandments, or serving his hurting people.

You live your God-given purpose horizontally.

The cross of Christ is a reminder of how much the Lord our God loves us. It’s also a fitting reminder of the two dimensions of what it means to walk like a Christian. Think of the vertical beam of the cross as representing the intimate relationship we should have with God.

Having an obediently intimate relationship with the triune God grounds our Christian walk in a solid spiritual reality just as the vertical beam of the cross was buried deep in the ground of Golgotha.

The Horizontal Beam of the Cross

The horizontal beam of the cross represents our Christian walk, how we are living out the Gospel in our lives, being a positive influence in all dimensions of our life. It is how we live out our God-given purpose horizontally, serving him as living witnesses of his love in service.

Spiritually, our Christian walk should be a process of continuous spiritual formation and sanctification, a growing in spiritual maturity that witnesses to others what it means to be a child of God.

The Christian's Walk

Do you recall movies like Grease in which the “cool” guys like John Travolta strutted their way across the screen as girls swooned? Wouldn’t it be “cool” if when you and I walked down the street heads would turn and onlookers would say, “Look, they walk like Christians!”

Listen to God's Words

Walk in obedience to all that the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land that you will possess. (Deuteronomy 5:33)

In the Words of Others

“While God, for the most part, allows this cosmos [creation] to work according to the laws of nature, there is never a time when He is not actively involved in every detail of life.” Charles R. Swindoll
